Inner Child…

We are about to enter the Christmas season, a time when many a thought turns to children and the wonder and excitement of Christmas morning’s delights awaiting them under the tree. It is one of those times that brings out the child within parents and other family members, a time when they feel that they have this “extra” permission to do so….for the children’s sake.

A good thing, for far too often this inner child is forgotten, neglected or not even recognized, let alone understood. We are told to “grow up” when we are young and soon enough we are forced into the straightjacket of adulthood responsibilities and squeezed out, goes our inner childlike mannerisms, maybe forever.

I’d like to share with you a poem I wrote about embracing that child within…

they always told her about her inner child
and of how it needed to be honoured, to be
nurtured, to be a part of her everyday life

they always told her, but she couldn’t
remember her childhood days, so
what was there to recall, to keep alive?

so, her days were filled with tasks and
chores, the adult things that life does
bring; a bit of this, a bit of that but
nothing to wake those younger ways

then, one day, she stopped to look,
a whisper in her ear bade wait, the
sun was shining, she hadn’t really
cared but now that whisper slowed her step

and there it was, no, there “she” was,
extending an offering of peace, a
gesture of friendship, a renewal of bonds
that once were stronger than spider webs

no more denial, no more fear, no
more running, the buck stopped here,
she shed a tear, then two, then three
one for the child and one for her
and one for their future, joined
forever together as one…

I hope that you will give your inner child a hug today…
